In the morning (May 19) we were delighted to find a lovely, picturesque spot that we almost missed, at Babcock State Park. Glade Creek Gristmill is a real working, reconstructed gristmill nestled on the edge of the stream among the rocks, rapids and wild rhododendrons. So pretty!
In another part of the park we discovered peaceful Boley Lake.
After we left Babcock, we took 219 N at Lewisburg. These West Virginia roads are beautiful with forests, streams, wildflowers, and outcroppings of rock; but they can also be challenging and very tiring for the driver of this truck camper because of the constant winding up and down and back and forth . . . So many curves, drop-off shoulders, steep cliffs, hairpin turns and 8-9% grades!
We stopped at Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park where the civil war battle of Droop Mountain took place. Since it was Sunday, the small museum was closed, and we ended up sitting in the truck during a loud thunderstorm. When the storm passed we drove to Lookout Tower.
We keep running into very narrow one lane roads in West Virginia that tend to make Mark a little crazy because there is no place to pull off if someone is coming from the other direction.
My driver resting his eyes!❤️
We were going to camp at Watoga State Park but somehow we missed the turnoff and ended up in Marlinton with no campgrounds. There were some RV’s parked behind the IGA so I went into the store to ask if we could park there for the night. The manager knew who owned the property and kindly called him for me. So that’s where we spent the night . . . For $30 we had electricity but no Restroom/Shower facilities.
While we were eating dinner another thunderstorm passed through with heavy winds that rocked the camper and rain and storms continued off and on during the night.
