Midland Trail, West Virginia

On Saturday, May 18th, we headed to West Virginia and stopped at the Welcome Center.  We were given directions to drive the Midland Trail following Rte 60 beginning along the Kanawha River.
Our first planned stop was to be the Kanawha Falls but the GPS took us on a wild goose chase in the wrong direction, and we had to do some backtracking to return to the correct route.  We found the Kanawha Falls that span the entire width of the river.

A little further on we found Cathedral Falls which was a pretty falls at a small rest stop park.

From there we drove up to Hawks Nest State Park along a very winding part of Rte 60 with stretches of 8% grade and hairpin turns.  Thankfully it was a nicely paved road with periodic lanes for slower traffic to move over and let others pass us.  At Hawks Nest State Park there are overlooks perched on the clifftop 585 feet above New River where you can see the New River Gorge Bridge.

Our next stop at Canyon Rim Visitor Center on Rte 19 had overlooks of the river at the base of the chasm, cliffs nearly 1000 feet high, and the New River Gorge Bridge.  The single-arch bridge soars 876 feet above the water below.
