After spending the night at Mathew’s Arm Campground in Shenandoah National Park, we spent today (May 22) traveling the 100 mile long Skyline Drive and stopping at the many overlooks to view the mountains and valleys below. The wildflowers continue to be gorgeous and prolific (as they have been all along the roads we’ve been traveling!) Spring is such a beautiful season!
The highlight of our day was Dark Hollow Falls. We’ve read that there are many spectacular falls in the park, but this one is supposedly the easiest to get to and one of the most impressive. It was definitely easy to get to since it was downhill all the way, but hiking back UP to the parking lot was a whole different matter 😬 and almost did me in. 😅 It was totally worth it though . . . It was the prettiest falls we’ve seen yet on this trip, although the photos I took are a VERY dim reflection of its beauty. The river tumbles down over a series of rocky drops, so as the trail continues downstream, a totally different portion of the falls is revealed . . . And because of the rocks and trees, the whole expanse of the falls cannot be seen from one viewpoint. We were fortunate to be there on a weekday when it was not very busy. (We heard the trail was really crowded last Saturday.)
We didn’t have the time, or the energy, to attempt hiking any of the other trails today.
Mark said to be sure and include that I saw a black bear resting by a rock along the road. It was just a quick glimpse and Mark missed it.
